Harms continued

During this past year we have added a number of new members who we welcome into our group. Sometimes it’s hard to become a Harmony Hawks member and those of us who have been members for a while lose track of the challenges. I’m glad each new member has found the chorus experience satisfying to him and will help the administrative team next year to improve our introduction of new members to the chorus operations and culture.

As I move on to the president’s position for 2006, I want to express my thanks in advance for all the support I will undoubtedly receive in the next year. And I welcome comments of all kinds from each member who has a suggestion to better the chorus experience in some way.
I hope to see each and every member at the Installation Banquet on January 7th.

Reflection On 2005
By Dean Beckman, Past President

As I sit down to reflect on this last year as President of the Harmony Hawks I am flooded with many feelings of success and frustrations. I am sure that my predecessors of the Presidents position have found themselves having many of the same feelings. Thoughts of goals accomplished and thoughts of goals unfulfilled. We have much to be proud of as a chorus and certainly many areas of needed improvement. Each year we do many things better than the year before, we find new areas needing improvement and sometimes even slip a little in our goals that we had set for the year. I believe that 2005 brought us several advancements to include: the continued growth in the area of Learning CD’s and the purchase of our own digital recording equipment. We put the entire Spring Show Program under Jim Erbe’s guidance as "Show Producer"; and Bob Kerdus and Ryan Schlader set the PR/Marketing goals for the chorus. We had a revitalization of the Harmony Hawks website under the tutelage of Jim Erbe and Ryan Schlader, and growth of the Hawkseye monthly newsletter under Dave Haase. We had continued improvement of presentation issues under Gary DeVries’ guidance; a great Gospel Concert under Wendell Aldrich’s direction and a great contest and overall improved musical abilities under the superb direction of John Hayden.

Much to be proud of isn’t there! Of course there are many others to be thanked (such as our wives and every chorus member) and much to continue to work on in the above-mentioned area and many other areas as well! I know that our new board will continue to struggle with these issues both new and old but I am confident that our 2006 board will bring new and better ideas, solutions and improvements.

Please be supportive as we continue to support our board and director throughout this New Year. Let’s make 2006 one of our best!

Don't Let The Calendar Fool You!
By John Hayden, Director

Beginning of a new year! It makes me think about what is to come and what it's going to take to get us there. I can't stress enough how important it is for us to be prepared, prepared with everything we do. Does that sound funny coming from me? Are you still laughing out loud? OK, for real now....every single thing we do depends on us putting in lots of time prior to the event making sure we feel prepared. We need to be prepared musically, prepared with our choreography, prepared administratively and prepared INDIVIDUALLY

Preparedness will ensure quality, it will ensure that we are all comfortable on stage, it will ensure us feeling better about selling lots of tickets to the Spring show and perhaps most important, it will allow all of us to feel very proud of our organization which will bring us full circle to feeling proud of what we do.

I do indeed work in a world at Benton that not only allows us, but often necessitates that we prepare things with very little time. At Benton we do 15-20 performances a year many of which have all new material. I indeed have come to the full realization (over the years) that to get one show a year ready for the Harmony Hawks requires an enormous amount of preparation that can fool one's calendar. It seems it's forever away, right? Don't let the calendar fool you. When we rehearse once a week we must plan to be ready far before we think we need to be ready.
