rehearse together, especially if you
have members that have not sung in a quartet before. Your
quartets will need to decide which pieces (a minimum of two) and
which tags to use. Remember, we are considered professionals when we
perform for each person.
I will take a moment to share an
experience that almost soured me on this experience. I was learning
tenor last year, which is slight different than my normal bass part.
My quartet members assured me that I would do fine, that quartetting
was very easy. This meant that my quartet members were confident
with their parts. However, reassurances did not help me; I had never
performed in a quartet before. Early on the morning of the
14th, I still had not practiced with my quartet and that
really irked me. Finally, with about 15 minutes before departure we
sang and then worked out a tag that we could all remember. It worked
out in the end, but my frustration could have been
averted.
I do have many fond memories, such as
wooing my stepmother, singing in an apartment to a lady, and
embarrassing a guy at McLeod in front of several of his co-workers,
just to name a few.
Even with my initial frustrations, I
really enjoyed Singing Valentines. I encourage everyone to
participate. It is such a wonderful experience and it bringing joy
and happiness to others.
Please let me know either during
rehearsal or by e-mail at smithseanr@yahoo.com if you
would like to sing. If you do not have a quartet, let me know and
I’ll either find you a quartet, or you can help out by driving other
quartets around.
Update On 2006
Show By Jim Erbe, Show
Chairman
Planning for the 2005 show
is well underway. Our theme this year -- and the "secret" title --
is "The Safety Show." Gary Glockhoff has written another fast-paced
script that tells of an encounter between the Harmony Hawks and an
OSHA safety inspector who just happens to be in the audience during
the show. He will "spontaneously" stop the show after selected tunes
to point out varied workplace safety violations -- all of which have
to be resolved before the show can continue. Jason Alberty,
Washington High School teacher and veteran of many Theatre Cedar
Rapids productions, will portray the OSHA guy. Barb Read will be
stage director for the show. Thanks, Barb!
So, you may
ask, why do we have a "secret" title? We Erbe continued on page
