The Hawkseye

February  2006 - page 3

Harms continued

- to serve as project chairmen,

- to participate as eager ticket and advertising promoters,

- to contribute as equipment handlers for riser set up and takedown, and riser transportation,

- to act as recruiters spreading the word of our enjoyable hobby to singers who haven’t thought about the possibility of participation.

Members, with your continuing help and support we will have no trouble meeting our goals for 2006. Whenever one of you has a helpful suggestion for operation of the chapter, bring your idea to me or to another officer. I assure you that, though we may not adopt every suggestion, we will not treat your ideas lightly. And please always feel welcome to attend board meetings. Our business is your business.

Thank you for electing me as your president for 2006. Let’s have a great year and "Keep the Whole World Singing."

Music Goals For 2006
By David Lasley, Music VP

As I sit in front of the computer screen on the day after our annual banquet I wonder to myself, "What should I say in my first contribution to the newsletter as the Music VP?" I am much more of a vocalist than a writer as most of you know.

With that being the case over the next year I will try to use the writing and teaching talents of people who do those things well to advance the idea of musical excellence in the Harmony Hawks. I am a firm believer in the old adage that we will never get any place other than where we are if we continue to do the same things in the same way. So I guess I am saying to look for some changes over the next year. I will continue to build on the firm musical foundation that has been formulated by my many predecessors, with an eye to making those changes that the board and I consider

necessary to our continued musical improvement.

What can you expect this year as part of the march to improving our music and performance?

1. Constant reminders about being committed to excellence in every aspect of our musical lives. As leaders it is our duty to demand excellence in all that we do. To expect less is to get less. I don’t think that average is good enough for this chorus.

2. A renewed emphasis on learning the music as quickly as possible to provide John the most time possible to hone our presentations.

3. A new idea of providing some craft instruction in each monthly newsletter.

4. An increased emphasis on show casing our hobby to those outside the Barbershop circle. This particular aspect may make some of you uncomfortable but I feel it is essential to our continued growth as a chorus. I’m not sure how we will or should do this so please share your thoughts about this by dropping me an e-mail.

And so in keeping with #3 above here are excerpts from an article by Dede Nibler, Sweet Adelines International Music Staff:

Contest Preparation - A Year Long Commitment

Each member must have a personal commitment to vocal improvement and a positive attitude toward the chorus/quartet for musical gains to be made. Your chorus deserves your very best efforts. What will make you the very best member? Commitment, positive participation and the desire to improve. Consider the following:

  1. Do you know your voice? Its strengths and weaknesses? Do you have a personal plan for vocal improvement? (To know your voice is to love it):

    1. Sing something everyday. Rehearse chorus music several times each week using current chorus tapes (learning tapes are not necessarily the current interpretation).
