Show Update
By Jim Erbe, Show Chairman

Last month we focused on music, so this month we'll talk about some of the aspects of the show that surround our performance.

We've already heard from Greg Koenigs that quartets are wanted for featured performances, either as "pull-outs" like the verse in "When I'm Sixty-Four," or for a whole number, like "Orange Colored Sky." Talk to Greg soon if you have a quartet and would like to perform. We're also working on a new show feature -- student quartets from area high schools. This program attempts to extend the educational arm of Harmony Hawks and the Barbershop Harmony Society. We've invited students to join us to learn music and receive mentoring from chorus members -- and perhaps join us as a member. If you'd like to be a mentor to student quartet, talk to Allan Harms

We'll also have some great guest talent. Our emcee this year will be Katheryn Foxx, radio personality from Mix 96.5 FM. We discovered Katheryn through her response card after a spring show. She loved it!

Joining Katheryn in the acting department will be Jason Alberty, a well known actor and director at Theatre Cedar Rapids. Jason plays our OSHA inspector -- but don't tell anyone! His presence in the audience is a surprise -- and bound to be a source of much entertainment during the show.

It's not too early to be thinking about costumes -- but it shouldn't take most of us long to get those lined up. The first half of the show is concert-style, so be sure your tuxedo, shirt, vest, etc, are in good shape. When was the last time you had them dry cleaned? After intermission we'll do our contest set of "Swimmin' Hole" and "Once Upon a Time." Costumes for that will be the same as in Des Moines -- jeans, plaid shirts, "long-john" style shirts, scruffy shoes (or no shoes at all), straw hats and fishing poles. No Gummy worms, please.

What, no scenery? Well, yes, but not nearly as much as last year. We'll have a simple but stylish setting for the chorus and a smaller background for the quartets. And no fancy platforms, just good old risers! Tom Harrington is tech director and head of set construction. He plans to start February 20 at Non-Profit Services, the building we used to complete the sets last year. It's located behind the Wal-Mart on Blairs Ferry Road NE.
