Tornado continued...

The tornado struck just eight days before the Old Capitol Chorus was to host the Central States District Spring Convention. The Sheraton Hotel, the headquarters hotel, sustain only minor damage and the Englert Theater, the contest site, escaped damage.

The National Weather Service determined the tornado that struck Iowa City was an F2 tornado, a tornado with an estimated wind speed of 150 mph. They estimated that the width of the tornado was 0.30 miles wide and the path was four and a half miles long.

Areas of downtown Iowa City that house University of Iowa students were seriously damaged or destroyed. A couple of sorority and fraternity houses were destroyed.

Apartment buildings and homes on the  northeast side of Iowa City were destroyed. Altogether it is estimated that damage will exceed 15 million dollars.

The real startling figure in the ordeal was the causalities, only 30 people were treated at hospitals for injuries and no deaths.
