The Hawkseye

July 2006 - page 5

Indy continued...

For Buzz Brown he will be singing with the New Tradition from Northbrook, Illinois. This will be Buzz's first time singing at a international chorus contest since the Harmony Hawks Chorus last went in 1960.

In case you're new to barbershop or have been living in a cave for the last 15 years, the New Tradition is a world class singing organization. They have won the international chorus championship once, back in 2001. How will they do this year? Only the judges will know. This is going to be a great chorus contest. The New Tradition will be up against The Vocal Majority, The Alliance, The Westminster Chorus, and the Northern Lights Chorus for the international chorus championship. Good luck Buzz!!!

Dean Beckman (pictured), Central States District Harmony Foundation Chairman, will be attending meetings early in the week to get the latest news about Harmony Foundation

Dave Haase, your Hawkseye editor, will be attending a PROBE (Association of Public Relation Officers and Bulletin Editors) meeting in Indianapolis. The Hawkseye has once again been entered in the International On-Line Bulletin Contest. Last year the Hawkseye came in second place overall only missing the top prize by 3-1/2 points. Hopefully we'll bring home the hardware this year.

During the contests the Harmony Hawks will not only be rooting on The New Tradition, but the Heart of America Chorus from Kansas City, and the Voices of America Chorus from St. Joseph, Missouri as well.

In the quartet contest the Central States District is well represented. Qualifying for the quartet contest are Vocal Spectrum, 12th Street Rag, and 3 Men and A Melody. There is a good chance that all three quartets could be in the quartet finals on Saturday. Good luck to all contestants!!!

What I'm looking forward to at Indianapolis
By Allan Harms

Sally and I went to our first International Contest in 1994 when it was in Pittsburgh. Then in 1997 we went again (Indianapolis) and at that

contest we discovered the wonderful opportunity to attend a presentation by the Vocal Majority in what I will call a "master class". It was fascinating to hear about the multi-step procedure for becoming a performing member of the Vocal Majority. A new member must qualify to join but isn't on the risers in performances until much later, after qualifying with demonstration of ability and knowledge of the repertoire. Just to join, the applicant needs to be able to repeat difficult intervals played by their music VP on a keyboard. Hearing about this was illuminating.

In 2000, when International was in Kansas City, we heard of the SalemAires Tuesday night party which has been happening ever since. The Salem, Oregon chorus has been sponsoring this party as a fundraiser for the Larry Ajer Memorial Fund and invites top contenders and others to perform in an extended "Pre Glow". When we first attended this event, I remember seeing the Entertainmen from Sweden, along some other choruses, and lots of top quartets, who performed songs from their show sets, not strictly from their contest repertoire. It was hard to tear ourselves away at 1:00 a.m., but we had begun to wonder how to get back downtown from the Westin (I think) at Hallmark Center. It turned out that another barbershopper who had driven to the site offered us a ride back downtown. Barbershoppers are nice people.

Anyway, we've been to this SalemAires party at several contests since and it has been great entertainment every time. Of course, you have to plan to get to the contest city by Tuesday night at the start of the contest weekend to be able to attend this great event. Anyway, we're planning to go again this year and here's who I have read will be on the playlist:

Realtime - 2005 Quartet Champs
Gotcha! - 2004 Quartet Champs

VoCa - Southern California A Cappella Ensemble

Spotlight- 2006 SAI Quartet Champs
Metropolis
Saturday Evening Post
3 Men & A Melody

and many others
