Spring Show 2007
by Dean Beckman & Bob Kerdus

I know that it is difficult to be thinking about the 2007 Spring Show with so many other events still being planned, rehearsed and prepared, the show is just around the corner.  The Spring Show Team has begun to plan the show and have been developing a working concept for the show. We have tentatively landed on a concept using music from the forties & fifties, and will be attempting to incorporate a number of songs that we have previously learned in the last several years. The show concept will include a couple of young men becoming soldiers, going to war and returning home after the war. We hope to be able to include songs for our next contest set. Of course all of this is subject to change and nothing is written in stone as of this time.

As always our Annual Chapter Show is a very important event for the Harmony Hawks. Not only is it an excellent opportunity for us to hone our singing and performing skills but this event is our most important fund raiser for the chorus. In order to make this event successful it is imperative that EACH member take an active role in the production. There are many functions that one can fill and I will take a moment to name a few…

  1. Learn your part, words and choreography EARLY.
  2. Help build/paint set
  3. Sell Tickets
  4. Sell advertisements
  5. Serve on the Spring Show Committee
  6. Attend rehearsals weekly as we prepare for the show.

Of course this list is not a complete list of all the things needed to be accomplished to have a successful show. We need you and your involvement!!! If you would be interested in serving on a committee or helping in any way, please let Bob or myself know ASAP.

The Five W’s and the H
By Dave Haase, former Hawkseye Editor

I guess this article should have been written while I was editor of The Hawkseye, but I decided to write it to help out the new editor, Richard Anderson. In journalism there are several questions a writer must ask themselves to make sure they have all the information they need in an article, they are known as the five "W’s" and the "H". The experienced writers in the chapter probably already know what I’m taking about, but for those who don’t, let me explain. When you write an article, be it for The Hawkseye, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, or any other publication, you must ask yourself, "Do I have all the information for the article?" You don’t know? Use the five "W’s" and the "H", who, what, where, when, why, and how. Let’s use the chapter picnic that we had in July as an example.

.

The question… when? When is it? The picnic was Sunday, July 16, 2006. Are there any other when questions? How about the time, when does it start? The picnic started at 12:00 p.m. One note on time, it is p.m. or a.m., all lower case, not PM or AM. The question…where? Where is the picnic being held? The picnic was held at Morgan Creek Park. The question…what? What do I bring? You bring your own meat to cook, a side dish to share, your own table service (plate and utensils), family, and guests. What is the chapter providing? The chapter provided the beer, pop, cups, charcoal, lighter fluid, and extra napkins and plates. Any other what questions? How about ‘What will be happening at the picnic besides eating?’ There are plenty of activities like horseshoes, tag singing, and gang singing.

The question…who? Who is going to be there or whom do I bring? That question was already covered under what…yourself, family, and guests. Two notes on who: First, don’t use words like it, them, her, or him unless you have established who it, them, her, or him are earlier in the article. Reread your article and see if any of those traps are there. Secondly, make sure you have the correct spelling of a person’s name. Is Anderson spelled Anderson or Andersen? I asked your new editor, Richard Anderson, that very question. The question…why? Why are we having this picnic? What a silly question, we are having this picnic to meet new chapter members and their families, enjoy each other in fellowship, to have fun, and of course…sing!!!The question…how? How do I get to Morgan Creek Park? Sean Smith, Program VP, provided the chapter with directions and a map.
