Kennedy Torch's Gary Lindsay
earns National Recognition and State Honors By Marcia
Hughes, Community Relations-CRCSD
The Kennedy High School newspaper, The Torch, has again earned
national recognition. For the fourth year in a row and six of the
last eight years, the Kennedy newspaper has been named the recipient
of the George Gallup Award from the International Quill & Scroll
organization. The Torch has earned the Gallup more often than
any other school newspaper in the state of Iowa. The editorial board
from the 2005-06 school year submitted all issues of the newspaper
for review by a jury of journalism professors and high school
instructors. Prior to submission the board completes an extensive
analysis of the issues and submits the review to the panel of
judges.
To earn the Gallup Award the submitted newspapers
must earn at least 925 points out of 1,000. The 2005-06 issues
earned 954 points of a possible 1,000. Gary Lindsay, advisor, and
the 2005-06 editorial board of Ben Abzug, Danielle Faille, Danny
Nordstrom, Ronni McCoy, and Sarah Haas have continued to enhance the
deep tradition of journalism excellence at Kennedy High School.
Kennedy's 2005 yearbook, The Profile earned the prestigious
Pacemaker Award at the national convention last spring, and our 40
year old literary magazine, the Plain Brown Wrapper was awarded
superior rating by NCTE. The PBW was the only literary magazine in
Iowa to earn the superior ranking last spring.
Gary Lindsay, Kennedy High School language arts teacher and
journalism advisor, has been named the recipient of the prestigious
Rod Vahl Teacher of the Year award by the Iowa High School Press
Association. The IHSPA presents the coveted award each year to
acknowledge excellence in teaching and advising of journalism
students. Mr. Lindsay has been advisor of the nationally
award-winning school newspaper, The Torch, for 22 years. He served
as president of IHSPA and has been an instructor of the University
of Iowa summer journalism workshops for eight years. The award is
being presented to Lindsay at the state conference being held at the
University of Iowa October 11.
More of the Holiday Show
Update by John
Donehower, East Central Coordinator
I hope this note
finds you all well! I'm sure I don't have to remind you that the
Holiday season is fast approaching as is our Harmony Holiday Shows
on December 9th. I'm sure you are all working diligently on your
music! (At least I hope you are all working on your music
diligently!) I have just a few update/reminders as well as some
questions that I need
answered:

|

1) For the large
chorus/holiday portion of the program, attire will be festive
holiday clothing: holiday sweaters, scarves, hats, etc. NOTE: This
is a holiday show, not a Hawkeye or college pep rally. Please leave
the logo shirts, sweatshirts and athletic sweaters at home. (I'll
leave my BADGER shirt at home too.)
2) Group rehearsals: Our
first rehearsal together will be in Iowa City at the Community
Center that the Old Capital Chorus rehearses at. It will be held
on Thursday, December 7th from 7:30 to 9:45. The second
rehearsal together will be on December 9th at Noon at Westminster
Church in Dubuque. (Our show there is at 2 PM.) Obviously, with only
two rehearsals together, the ball is in your court to get things
learned!
3) Tickets for both shows will be available at the
door. We also plan to distribute tickets in advance to participating
groups for purchase at early-bird prices. (More details to follow.)
4) There are several bits of info that I need to further the
planning process and refine advertising. I need someone from each
group to answer each of the following questions asap:
4a) How many singers (including guests) do you
anticipate participating in the shows? 4b) Does your chorus want
to perform by itself on the first half of the show?
4c) Assuming we will have time for each chorus to sing
3 songs on the first half, what would your group like to sing?
BIG NEWS! STREAMLINE, everyone's favorite up and coming
quartet will be performing on the Holiday shows! They will do 3
non-holiday songs on the first half and "Mary Had a Baby" on the
second half. TOO COOL!
Things are really shaping up nicely! We are trying to
make it as easy as possible for as many men as possible to
participate. Try to come to the rehearsals. Learn your music. Sing
your heart out. Let's work hard now and play hard
later!
PS: Dubuque's Annual Show is coming up on
Saturday, November 4th at 7:30 PM. Special Guests are STORM
FRONT (Current 10th place International) and STREAMLINE (Future
International competitors!). Tickets are only $12.50 each! Want
tickets or more information? Just let me know!
